Adult ESL Tutoring: Martha’s Journey to Connection and Confidence

At the Livingston County Literacy Coalition (LCLC), every tutoring relationship is unique. Sometimes, the most powerful learning happens through partnership—and that’s exactly what volunteer tutors Deb and Shelly have discovered through adult ESL tutoring.

Deb and Shelly met during LCLC’s new tutor training in 2025 and quickly decided to tutor together. Working as a team helped ease what can sometimes feel like a leap of faith for a new volunteer tutor.

Over the past year, they have partnered as co-tutors for two different learners, meeting with each learner separately while supporting one another as a team. Their approach allows tutoring to remain personalized to each learner while bringing the consistency, encouragement, and shared perspective of two dedicated volunteers.

As Deb puts it:

“Whatever it is, we feel that together… it’s magic!”

How Adult ESL Tutoring Supports Martha’s Goals

Originally from Germany, Martha came to the United States after retiring to spend more time with her grown children.

From the beginning, she brought a clear sense of purpose and determination to learning English.

“My goals are to be able to speak fluent English, have more friends, and get involved in the community.”

For Martha, learning English isn't simply about completing lessons. It's a way to communicate more confidently, build relationships, and become more connected to her community.

Practicing English Beyond Weekly Tutoring

Martha’s dedication extends well beyond her weekly tutoring sessions.

She uses online ESL resources and incorporates English practice into everyday routines. She even speaks English to herself while cooking or exercising.

That commitment has helped transform the tutoring sessions themselves.

What began as structured lessons has naturally evolved into a weekly “friends’ lunch,” where conversation flows freely in English and laughter—a universal language—abounds.
