Adult Literacy Tutoring Helps Cesar Pursue His Nursing Dream

When Cesar Hernandez came to the United States from Mexico, he brought with him professional experience, determination, and a dream: to continue his career as a nurse.
Reaching that goal meant strengthening his English skills. Through adult literacy tutoring with the Livingston County Literacy Coalition (LCLC), Cesar found individualized support to help him improve his English and work toward his professional goals.
“My name is Cesar, I’m from Mexico. I’m a nurse. My main goal to study English is to obtain my MET certification then take the NCLEX exam in order to obtain my nursing license in the USA.”
Cesar was matched with LCLC volunteer tutor Eric Evans, and together they began working toward that goal.
Building English Skills and Everyday Confidence
Through regular practice and conversation, Cesar began noticing changes that extended far beyond his tutoring sessions.
He became more comfortable having conversations with native English speakers, answering phone calls, and reading newspapers and magazines.
His growing English skills also helped him advocate for himself in everyday situations. Cesar successfully handled a store pricing error and addressed a warranty issue after purchasing tires—interactions that can be much more difficult when communicating in a language you are still learning.
“In conclusion,” Cesar said, “the tutoring has made great changes in my daily life.”
A Tutor in His Corner
Cesar's progress didn't happen overnight. He and Eric committed to meeting twice a week for two-hour tutoring sessions, consistently working toward Cesar's English and career goals.
Eric saw Cesar's determination from the beginning.
“Cesar has grit! Loads of it. Cesar has a dream and is actually out there fighting to get it, not just talking or dreaming about it. He is a fighter and I am proud to coach him!”
For Eric, Cesar was also his first learner as an LCLC volunteer tutor. Their partnership demonstrates the difference that consistent, personalized support can make when a learner and tutor work together toward a meaningful goal.
Adult Literacy Tutoring Leads to Measurable Progress
Cesar could see his progress as he prepared for the Michigan English Test (MET).
When he began, Cesar scored 22% on a mock MET exam. Over time, his score climbed to 55%, and he set his sights on reaching 80%.
But those numbers tell only part of the story.
Every improvement in Cesar's English represented another step toward his larger goal of continuing the nursing career he began in Mexico.
“I know it has been hard,” Cesar said, “but with this approach I will achieve my goal.”
Then Came Some Very Good News
This spring, Eric shared an exciting update with LCLC:
Cesar had passed an exam in the nursing field with a score of 85.
It was an exciting milestone in a journey built on determination, consistent practice, and a willingness to keep working toward a dream.
Cesar's accomplishment also had an impact on his tutor. Eric told LCLC that the news had renewed his enthusiasm for tutoring and helping other adults accomplish their goals.
Adult Literacy Is About More Than Reading
Cesar's story demonstrates why adult literacy matters.
It can mean answering the phone with confidence. Understanding what someone is saying. Advocating for yourself when something isn't right. Preparing for an important exam. Pursuing a career. Or working toward returning to a profession you love.
For Cesar, improving his English has been part of building the life and career he envisioned when he came to the United States.
And he has some encouragement for other adults who may be considering tutoring:
“I just want to say thanks for helping me. If somebody is reading this and has the opportunity to take tutoring, go ahead. It has several advantages in your daily life. I really appreciate this program.”
