From ABCs to Confidence: Adult English Tutoring in Livingston County
Learning a new language takes courage, practice, and time. It can also take someone who is willing to keep showing up.
For two adult English learners in Livingston County, their journey began with the basics: ABC letter recognition.
More than a year later, they are reading English passages aloud, discussing vocabulary, practicing pronunciation, learning idioms, writing sentences, and having conversations about their lives.
Their progress is a wonderful example of what can happen through consistent, personalized adult English tutoring in Livingston County.
A Literacy Program That Continued Beyond the Workplace
The two learners originally connected with the Livingston County Literacy Coalition (LCLC) through a workplace literacy pilot in March 2025.
Eventually, the workplace pilot came to an end.
Their learning didn't.
Their volunteer tutor continued working with them, meeting for two-hour tutoring sessions each week. That consistency gave the learners an opportunity to continue developing their English skills while building a trusting relationship with someone invested in their success.
What Adult English Tutoring in Livingston County Can Look Like
Their tutoring sessions aren't built around memorizing lists of English words. Instead, their tutor incorporates conversation, reading, listening, pronunciation, vocabulary, culture, and writing.
Each session begins with a simple question: What's new?
The learners talk about their week, share stories, ask questions, and discuss important things happening in their lives. It creates a comfortable environment where English becomes something they use to communicate—not simply something they study.
Next comes listening comprehension. Their tutor reads a passage aloud, and then each learner takes a turn reading. Together, they discuss what the passage means, explore unfamiliar vocabulary, work on pronunciation, and sometimes compare English words with similar words or sounds in Spanish.
They also study English idioms connected to the week's topic and, when time allows, complete a writing prompt.
When a Mistake Becomes a Learning Opportunity
One tutoring session provided a perfect example of how much learning can come from an everyday misunderstanding.
During a listening activity, one learner heard the word “lessens” but thought the tutor had said “listens.”
Instead of simply correcting the mistake and moving on, the tutor turned it into a lesson.
Soon they were comparing:
Lessens. Listens. Lessons.
Three words that can sound remarkably similar to someone learning English—and three opportunities to practice listening, pronunciation, vocabulary, and meaning.
There was learning, but there was also laughter.
That's important.
Adult learners need opportunities to make mistakes, ask questions, experiment with language, and keep trying in an environment where they feel comfortable doing so.
From Learning Letters to Understanding Idioms
Perhaps the most remarkable part of this story is how far these learners have come.
Their tutor described their journey this way:
“Pretty cool journey, we started at ABC letter recognition…”
Today, their lessons can include something as complex as idioms and figurative language.
In one lesson, they explored why English speakers use idioms, how an expression can mean something different from the literal meaning of its individual words, and how idioms can reflect culture.
They were even challenged to think about the difference between literal and figurative language and identify an idiom from their own culture.
That's a long way from learning the ABCs.
The Power of a Volunteer Tutor
This success story isn't about reaching a finish line.
It's about progress.
It's about two adults who have continued dedicating themselves to learning English and a volunteer tutor who has continued dedicating time to helping them.
Week after week, those hours add up.
Letters become words. Words become sentences. Sentences become conversations. And conversations can lead to greater confidence at work, at home, and throughout the community.
