Supporting Adult Literacy in Livingston County: LCLC Connects with the Community

LCLC Board Member Dale Karolak represented the organization at our table, where approximately 20–30 people stopped by to learn more about LCLC and the work we are doing throughout Livingston County.

The Livingston County Literacy Coalition (LCLC) was excited to participate in the Adult Clubs and Organizations Expo at the Brighton District Library on August 15.

The event gave us an opportunity to connect with community members interested in adult literacy, ESL programs, and volunteer tutoring in Livingston County.

LCLC Board Member Dale Karolak represented the organization at our table, where approximately 20–30 people stopped by to learn more about LCLC and the work we are doing throughout Livingston County.

One of the most encouraging parts of the afternoon was meeting several retired teachers who were interested in learning more about LCLC. Our volunteer tutors are at the heart of our organization, providing free, personalized literacy and English language support to adults who live or work in Livingston County.

While teaching experience is certainly not required to become an LCLC tutor, retired educators bring knowledge and experience that can be incredibly valuable to adult learners. LCLC provides training, resources, and ongoing support to help all of our volunteer tutors feel prepared and confident in their role.

Josie also stopped by to lend a hand at the LCLC table and helped us share the event on social media.

Visitors had the opportunity to learn about LCLC's programs and volunteer opportunities, and many also picked up information about our upcoming Trivia for Literacy fundraiser.

Events like this give us an opportunity not only to tell people what LCLC does, but also to build relationships with community members who may become future volunteers, supporters, partners, or advocates for adult literacy.

You don't have to be a teacher to make a difference.

LCLC volunteers come from many different backgrounds and can get involved in a variety of ways. Volunteer tutors can work one-on-one with an adult learner, assist in adult ESL classes, participate in ESL conversation groups, or support other literacy initiatives in our community.

Every new connection helps us move closer to our vision of a thriving community where compassion, education, and collaboration create lifelong learning opportunities, strengthen families, and foster economic and social self-sufficiency.
